Coach Rick Sofield is a former three sport athlete at Harvard University (football, wrestling and lacrosse). Rick has been the head coach at Bishop Ireton since 2011 and during his past nine seasons, he has accumulated a record of 160-47. Additionally, he has placed over fifty players into collegiate programs, including his daughter Charlotte, who was a national champion defender and midfielder at University of North Carolina.

 

During Rick’s tenure, the Cardinals have competed in seven VISAA state championships, winning in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018, and has won five WCAC Championships in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The Cardinals are consistently ranked among the Top 10 of multiple national polls.  

 

Coach Sofield has won numerous accolades. He was named VISAA State Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2017, WCAC Coach of the year in 2014, Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 2014, and USA Today Coach of the Year in 2015. Additionally, Rick was honored to be a presenter at the US Lacrosse convention.

 

In addition to his daughter Charlotte, Rick has three sons: Declan, who is a former Bishop Ireton Cardinal Award winner and three-sport athlete at Bishop Ireton (football, wrestling and lacrosse) and is currently a senior at James Madison University; Jamison, who was a three-sport athlete at Bishop Ireton (All- State football, plus wrestling and lacrosse) who currently plays football at the Virginia Military Institute; and Finnian who is a senior four-sport athlete at Bishop Ireton (football 2 seasons, a WCAC Champion in wrestling, ice hockey 1 season, and lacrosse).  Rick’s wife Alice is a former three-sport HS athlete and collegiate volleyball player who currently serves as a Senior Vice President with a prestigious public relations firm.
